چکیده

An interpolation based non-conforming spectral element atmospheric model is described. The error norms for a standard test problem are compared against uniform resolution results. Preliminary results for an adaptive mesh refinement strategy are reported. To avoid local time-stepping, a nonlinear variant of operator integration factor splitting has been implemented. A backward differentiation formula is applied to Coriolis and gravity wave terms. Runge-Kutta integration is used for sub-stepping and the implicit system is solved by Krylov iteration. For a fixed time step size, h and p refinement studies demonstrate that the nonlinear OIFS scheme allows an additional level of space refinement compared to a Crank-Nicholson/Leapfrog scheme.

Analyses and applications of three spatial discretization methods

As detailed in recent reports [2 §1; 3; & op. cit. therein], a need has long been well established and many investigations undertaken at NCAR and elsewhere, to create high-resolution numerical simulation methods for atmospheric dynamics, that are accurate similarly to spectral methods and computationally efficient similarly to finite-element type methods. Two research codes that demonstrate the...

Adaptive computations on conforming quadtree meshes

In this paper, the quadtree data structure and conforming polygonal interpolants are used to develop an h-adaptive finite element method. Quadtree is a hierarchical data structure that is computationally attractive for adaptive numerical simulations. Mesh generation and adaptive refinement of quadtree meshes is straight-forward. However, finite elements are non-conforming on quadtree meshes due...

Mass conservation of the unified continuous and discontinuous element-based Galerkin methods on dynamically adaptive grids with application to atmospheric simulations

We perform a comparison of mass conservation properties of the continuous (CG) and discontinuous (DG) Galerkin methods on non-conforming, dynamically adaptive meshes for two atmospheric test cases. The two methods are implemented in a unified way which allows for a direct comparison of the non-conforming edge treatment. We outline the implementation details of the non-conforming direct stiffnes...

Geophysical-astrophysical spectral-element adaptive refinement (GASpAR): Object-oriented h-adaptive code for geophysical fluid dynamics simulation

We present an object-oriented geophysical and astrophysical spectral-element adaptive refinement (GASpAR) code for application to turbulent flows. Like most spectralelement codes, GASpAR combines finite-element efficiency with spectral-method accuracy. It is also designed to be flexible enough for a range of geophysics and astrophysics applications where turbulence or other complex multiscale p...

Analysis of an Hp-Non-conforming Discontinuous Galerkin Spectral Element Method for Wave

We analyze the consistency, stability, and convergence of an hp discontinuous Galerkin spectral element method. The analysis is carried out simultaneously for acoustic, elastic, coupled elastic–acoustic, and electromagnetic wave propagation. Our analytical results are developed for both conforming and non-conforming approximations on hexahedral meshes using either exact integration with Legendr...
